Cashew from Goa

Goa is where the cashew first landed in India — Portuguese traders carried seeds and seedlings here in the 1560s. Four and a half centuries later, Goa remains the heritage processing region: smaller in volume than Kerala but unmatched in W180 and W240 grading reputation.

The Goan heritage

The cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) is not native to Goa — Portuguese explorers carried it from northeastern Brazil in the 1560s, primarily as a soil-binder for fragile laterite slopes. It thrived. By the 18th century, Goa had become India's first commercial cashew region. The Portuguese also developed cashew feni, a distillate of the cashew apple — Goa's signature spirit and now a Geographical Indication-protected product.

Why source from Goa

  • Premium grade reputation — Goan processors are renowned for careful W180 and W240 grading. Many gift-pack and luxury retail buyers source exclusively from Goa.
  • Heritage processing — traditional manual shelling and peeling preserved alongside mechanical lines, allowing higher whole-kernel ratios.
  • Cashew apple side-stream — Goan processors maintain the only commercial cashew apple supply chain (for feni). For buyers interested in apple-based products, Goa is the only viable origin.
  • Strong English-language operations — easier export coordination than some inland regions.

What's changing

Goan processing capacity has declined modestly over the past decade as coastal land has shifted toward tourism. Pricing has firmed in response. Goa now serves the premium-grade niche while higher-volume orders flow to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

Cashew feni — the apple's afterlife

Cashew feni (Caju Feni) is a GI-tagged spirit produced from fermented cashew apple juice, traditionally distilled in clay pots (bhatti). Production is restricted to Goa under the GI specification. For buyers exploring side-stream products from the cashew supply chain, feni is the most established and lucrative.
