Brazil isn't the biggest cashew producer — it isn't even close. But it's the only country that can claim to be the cashew's birthplace. Anacardium occidentale evolved in the coastal cerrado of northeastern Brazil, and Portuguese ships carried it from here to the rest of the tropics in the 1500s.

The botanical homeland
The cashew tree is one of relatively few major commercial food crops with a clearly attributable single origin. Anacardium occidentale evolved in the coastal cerrado of northeastern Brazil — primarily what is now Ceará, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte states. Indigenous peoples (Tupi-Guarani) ate the cashew apple and used the kernel for centuries before Portuguese colonizers arrived in the 1500s.
The cashew apple legacy
In Brazil, the cashew apple is the more commercially valued part of the fruit (unlike the rest of the world, where the kernel dominates). Brazilian cashew apple products include:
- Cajuína — a clear sweet juice made from clarified cashew apple, particularly popular in Piauí
- Cashew wine and feni-style spirits — fermented and distilled cashew apple alcohols
- Fresh apple — sold in markets across northeastern Brazil
- Cashew apple molasses, jellies, vinegar — value-added products
